Follow in the Footsteps of Hobbits, Dwarfs, Elves and Men
We cover a lot of ground on the tour, but there is enough time to explore; recreate scenes for yourself and work out how the movies were made. Due to our small group size we are the specialist in getting you amongst the action whilst enjoying a personal experience. The scenery of Wellington mirrors that of Middle Earth.
Come explore it with us on this relaxing Full day tour! We pick up from your central city accommodation between 8.30am and 9am. The morning is spent exploring the city locations on Mount Victoria and the ‘greenbelt’ we spend 40min walking through the OUTER SHIRE. This location includes the famous ‘Get off the road’ scene, the ‘shortcut to mushrooms’ and the Black Rider scenes and many more. Then it’s off to the Weta Studios for an inside look at the Wellington film industry. Our visit to Weta will include the BRAND NEW ‘Window into Workshop’ exhibition; which is a guided tour of the inner working of the Weta Studios; the physical side of the film production company. Also a short film showcasing the Digital side of Weta. And finally a opportunity to peruse the Weta Cave Museum and Shop.
After the mornings excitement, it’s time for an Orc sized lunch. We head out to Scorch-O-Rama cafe for an LOTR themed menu designed especially for Wellington Rover Tours. This is included in the cost of your tour. The afternoon is spent exploring the Hutt Valley. Stops include the Hutt River (Great River Anduin) and Harcourt Park (Gardens of Isengard and where the Orcs felled the trees).
And finally we visit Kaitoke Regional Park which was the setting for Rivendell. Situated in a thousand year old New Zealand Native rainforest, you will see why the Elves chose to live here!
We also see the location where Helms Deep & Minas Tirith were filmed. This is now a working quarry and inaccessible to visitors. There are two main components of our tours. Firstly the locations. Our tour visits the best locations in Wellington. Secondly is the HOW, the WHY and the WHAT! WHAT do we see and talk about? HOW was Wellington turned into Middle Earth? and WHY did Peter Jackson choose to film here? By answering these 3 questions we have developed Wellingtons Best Lord of the Rings Tours. We train up Lord of the Rings fans to be great guides. They are fun, knowledgeable and our biggest asset. Our roomy vans allow for interaction with the guides so you can chat with them and learn LOTR secrets all day. The tour is structured for the best experience. From the order we visit locations, to the order we visit different scenes at each location.
